This well known eBook starts with Gabriel John Utterson, a London prosecutor, on his regular weekly walk with his relative Richard Enfield, who tells him of an encounter he had seen some months ago while coming home late at night from Cavendish Place. He describes a ghastly figure named Edward Hyde who trampled a young girl, disappeared into a door on the street, and re-emerged to pay off her relatives with 10 pounds in gold and a cheque signed by a respectable gentleman Dr. Henry Jekyll for 90 pounds. Jekyll had recently changed his will to make Hyde his sole beneficiary, so this piece of news concerns Utterson as Jekyll is his client and he fears that Hyde is blackmailing Jekyll for his money and thus he makes an effort to seek Hyde out. He finally meets Hyde whos ugliness and deformities provokes an instinctive feeling of revulsion in him. Hyde willingly offers Utterson Jekyll's address much to Utterson's surprise and after a dinner party of Jekyll's, Utterson stays behind to discuss the matter of Hyde with Jekyll. Utterson notices Jekyll turning pale on the subject, yet he assures Utterson that everything involving Hyde is in order and that he is to be left alone. A year passes uneventfully. Then one night, a servant girl witnesses Hyde beat a man to death with a cane. The police contact Utterson as the victim happens to have been one of his clients which starts Utterson's further investigations into the Jekyll and Hyde connection...
