The eBook starts with the family in the hold of a sailing ship during a frightful storm. The ship runs aground, and the family learns the ship's crew has taken to a lifeboat and abandoned them. Despite searching they are not able to find the crew.
The ship stays intact during the night, and in the morning the family find themselves within sight of a tropical island. The family build a raft, lash livestock and the most valuable supplies they can salvage from the ship to it, and paddle to the island, where they set up temporary shelter.
Over a few weeks they make several expeditions back to the ship, to empty its hold, and manage to obtain rigging, planks, and sails. They construct a small homestead on the island with the provisions.
The book continues as a series of vignettes, covering several years. The father and older boys explore various environments about the island, discover various and often improbable plants and animals. One day they sail around the island's coast, and discover a European family hiding from local pirates. They adopt their daughter, who initially masquerades as a boy, while her father attempts to get help.
