'Ernest' explains that in the country, he must have a serious attitude for the benefit of his young charge, the heiress Cecily Cardew, and goes by the name of John and Jack is his nickname. In the city he is at liberty to be the libertine Ernest. Algernon has his own confession - let the play begin...
